Work-Life Balance – Live to work or work to live?

What is work-life balance?

Work-life balance refers to the search for a balance between the responsibilities and commitments that a person assumes both in their personal life and in their work environment.

This concept focuses on people's ability to satisfactorily fulfill their obligations in both their work and personal lives, avoiding negative interactions between both spheres. (repsol, 2023)

In short, work-life balance is the state of equilibrium where a person equally prioritizes the demands of one’s career and the demands of one’s personal life. Many people seek work-life balance, but it’s not always easy to achieve.

Some of the common reasons that lead to a poor work-life balance include:

  • Increased responsibilities at work
  • Working longer hour
  • Increased responsibilities at home
  • Having children

What is the importance of work-life balance?

It’s important to work toward reaching and maintaining a healthy equilibrium between your personal and professional life. A good work-life balance has numerous positive effects, including stress reduction, a lower risk of burnout and a greater sense of well-being. This benefits both employees and employers. (Sanfilippo, 2023)

It is said, work is worship, but that does not mean you have to let your job rule your life. Putting your personal needs first is essential.

Your health could be negatively impacted by excessive stress. You may experience mental stress leading to high blood pressure, which can further impact you physically and could be even fatal many times.

A recent study by the World Health Organization and the International Labor Organization found that working more than 55 hours a week increases your risk of ischemic heart disease and stroke, as compared to working for 30 to 40 hours a week. The more hours you put into your work, the more will be the risk of heart disease or brain stroke. (Kalyan, 2023)

Improving work-life balance at work

  • Learn to say “no”

Learning how to say no can be one of the hardest soft skills for any dedicated professional to learn and put into practice. But it’s an important part of setting boundaries.

  • Take breaks.

Even a 30-second microbreak can improve concentration, reduce stress, keep you feeling engaged and make your work feel more enjoyable. If you have a lunch break at your place of work, it’s your right to use it. This means you shouldn’t be expected to always eat at your desk and work through lunch. You can take this time to enjoy your meal mindfully. You can also do short meditations or breathing exercises if your stress levels are high or experience chronic stress.

  • Ask for flexibility.

Having open, honest conversations about your needs and those of your employer and team can lead to productive solutions. Those can include flextime, a compressed workweek schedule, job sharing, and other creative options.

  • Prioritize your health.

Recognizing the importance of maintaining your physical health, emotional well-being, and mental fitness is the first step to making it a priority in your life. Use the concept of habit stacking to build simple, supportive actions into your day.

Improving work-life balance at home

  • Communicate boundaries so you can truly unplug.

Set and communicate your work hours to your colleagues and customers so that you have clear boundaries. This should include when you’ll work and when you won’t be available to respond.

  • Invest in relationships.

Make sure to spend your time nurturing relationships that matter to you. If you took the previous steps to unplug, then you’ll be able to give more attention to the people you spend your time with.

  • Make space in your schedule for family time.

For this to work, everyone in your family needs to make this time a priority. Make sure you’re all on the same page. You all need to decide to take the necessary steps to carve this time out. You can also set this time apart to call family members or other loved ones who live far away. (Judy Wolf, 2021)

Conclusion

Achieving a healthy work-life balance is a major challenge the employees have to face with the current inflation.

The increasing demand of daily life, rising inflation rates and over-indebtedness, have placed an enormous strain on employees to manage their finances effectively. As the cost of living goes up and as a result of increasing bills, the employees are compelled to work for more hours or to take on additional jobs to withstand inflation and to maintain their standard of living. Spending too much time at work owing to financial constraints may affect relationships with their loved ones. The employees may feel isolated and disconnected as they don't have much time to spend with their family and friends. This can negatively affect their mental and physical well-being, as well as their job performance. Having less time for personal activities, hobbies and relaxation while struggling to balance personal life, finances, and job obligations may lead to increased stress, and could result long-term health consequences. Poor work-life balance may result in unhealthy lifestyle choices, such as lack of exercise, poor diet, and insufficient sleep, and may lead to health problems over time.

In the present context, the value of work-life balance is becoming an important aspect for both employees’ well-being and organizational productivity. Employers should ensure that they prioritize the personal well-being of their employees and support them during this challenging period to enhance job satisfaction.

Implementing flexible work arrangements, promoting financial assistance programs, offering salary increments, and taking initiatives to promote stress-free environment in the workplace may support employees in achieving a healthy balance between work and personal life as they will be motivated to excel and achieve goals and more likely to feel confident and satisfied in their jobs.
